Prof. Gerrit Jan Meulenbeld was conferred with the title of Yavanācharya of Ayurveda in recognition of the outstanding contributions he has made towards unraveling the glorious history of the Indian medical tradition. Gerrit Jan Meulenbeld (1928–2017) is a physician and scholar famous for his researches in Indology, especially in the field of Ayurveda. 'The coming generations will fondly remember this great Dutch scholar for his encyclopedic work, History of Indian Medical Literature. Gerrit Jan Meulenbeld studied medicine and Indology in Utrecht. From 1954 he worked as a psychiatrist. At the end of the nineteen-sixties he returned to Indology. Immediately after receiving his doctorate Meulenbeld began to write the historical overview of the Indian medical literature. Since 1978 he worked as a research fellow at the University of Ghent and psychiatrist at the Van Mesdagkliniek in Groningen. In 1986 accepted a full-time job at the Mesdagkliniek when the Indian Institute of Languages and Cultures of the University was threatened with closure. There he worked until his retirement in 1988. The scholarship of Meulenbeld is extended to our cyber space in the form of Annotated bibliography of Indian Medicine with more than 10000 entries. www.indianmedicine.ub.rug.nl and through the electronic journal on Indian medicine'. Dr Meulenbeld extended his helping hand constantly to thousands of Ayurveda lovers all over the world , through his untiring works on his website which opens up his scholarship to present generation of Ayurveda students.
Born in 1917, Sankaran Namboodiripad is the son of Damodaran Namboodiri of Valloor Mana at Kalluvazhi in old Valluvanad taluk and Uma Antharjanam of Akkithath Mana. VMC Sankaran Nampoothiri was conferred with the honorable title of Vṛddhācarya of Ayurveda in recognition of the exemplary dedication and perseverance in preserving the traditional methods of education and practice in the field of Ayurveda during the International Grand Centennial Celebrations of Aryavaidyan PV Rama Varrier’s Birth Anniversary held at Coimbatore, India.. He was the of the system of face to face learning (mukhamukham) that constituted the traditional method of learning Ayurveda. VMC Sankaran Nampoothiri was trained in the Vedas and Sanskrit but specialised in the branch of toxicology called Visha Vaidya at a young age. He is a master in expounding the teachings of the classical Ayurvedic text Aṣṭāñgahṛdayam.
